Whether you’re out in the woods or having a campout in the backyard, a camping scavenger hunt is the perfect activity for the kids!

Whether you're out in the woods or having a campout in the backyard, a camping scavenger hunt is the perfect activity for the kids!

I’m getting so excited for summer! My boys are always asking to have barbecues and recently have started asking to fill up the swimming pool. We had a few really nice days that got them itching for summer. One of their favorite summer activities is camping. We took them camping in Island Park, ID last summer and they have been begging to camping again since. We also have a great time just camping in the backyard! We recently took advantage of a warm weekend and had ourselves a family campout right outside our back door. It was so much fun and really easy to put together.

Whether you're out in the woods or having a campout in the backyard, a camping scavenger hunt is the perfect activity for the kids!

I made the kids a camping scavenger hunt that they can do on a camping trip in the woods or one in our backyard. I took the traditional scavenger hunt a step further by having them do it when it was getting dark, so they had to use a flashlight to find the items on the list. They absolutely loved it! We used Energizer® Ultimate Lithium™ batteries in our flashlights because they’re the #1 longest lasting AA battery. We plan on having many nighttime scavenger hunts this summer so we need long lasting batteries! We also love that they’re lightweight so the kids don’t have a hard time hauling around a flashlight with huge, bulky batteries. I was impressed with the performance and that they last 20 years on the shelf!

All-American Burger - A juicy beef burger is topped with America's favorite burger toppings! This burger is going to be at a lot of BBQ's this summer.

A family campout in the backyard can be so simple to plan and carry out. After putting up the tent, we grilled our favorite All-American Burgers and hotdogs. The kids love eating in their camp chairs!

Backyard Campout

Indoor S’mores are the perfect dessert for a backyard campout! We don’t have a fire pit so we don’t make s’mores. Indoor S’mores are so tasty and the kids love them. And they’re super easy to make so it’s a win-win!

My kids love being in their sleeping bags. They read a lot of books together in their sleeping bags and that it was really fun using flashlights to see the pages when it got dark.

DIY FAIRY TREEHOUSE PENDANT LIGHT

DIY pendant light for your deck or maybe even your child's treehouse! This easy DIY outdoor light was made from some surprising materials you probably already have - and if not, they'll only cost you like $4!

I’m so excited to share Miss G’s Fairy Treehouse reveal with you today.

It’s been a project that I’ve been looking forward to since we finished construction on her fairy house late last summer, but I waited because I knew that the excitement of having a treehouse was good enough initially.

I wanted to create a magical space that was all her own – just steps away from our main deck.

I tried to leave some space available so that she could help create a few magical additions to her treehouse after the reveal, and it’s also not warm enough yet for me to set out any flowers so I’m going to have her help pick those out in a couple weeks.

(I’ll do a full post with the full details on the Fairy Treehouse once she’s been able to add her own creative touch and we’ve added some flowers.)

DIY PENDANT LIGHT TUTORIAL

But before we get to the reveal – I’m going to share with you how I made a dramatic and professional looking pendant light for Miss G’s treehouse using a couple of unexpected materials and Energizer® Ultimate Lithium™ batteries.

This DIY Pendant Light adds a major wow factor to the fairy treehouse and I think it looks almost store-bought! No one is going to believe that this pendant light only cost you $4 to make!

We partnered with Energizer® on this post and used Energizer® Ultimate Lithium™ batteries because they are lightweight, leak resistant and perform in extreme temperatures, making them a great choice for outdoor use. The AA batteries are the #1 longest lasting AA batteries, so I won’t have to be getting out the ladder and swapping out the batteries all of the time.

We also bought an extra pack of the batteries to use in Miss G’s walkie talkies, because I’m pretty sure she’s now going to be spending most of her time in her magical Fairy Treehouse.

How to makde a DIY Outdoor light using everyday garden materials and fairy lights

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR DIY OUTDOOR PENDANT LIGHT

  • 2 wire hanging garden baskets
  • Fairy twinkle lights
  • Black zip ties
  • Energizer® Ultimate Lithium™ batteries (AA/AAA as indicated on the twinkle lights)
  • Twine, optional for hanging
  • Pliers

Tip: the only change I would make to this DIY is that I would have purchased a much longer string of fairy lights to make it brighter and having more interest.

HOW TO MAKE A DIY PENDANT LIGHT

Remove any chains or tags from the hanging garden baskets, using scissors or pliers as needed.

Determine if you will use the provided chain to hang up the basket or twine. I used the provided chain and used my pliers to connect the chains to form one long chain, by opening and connecting the ending chains.

Place the openings of the baskets together and secure using the zip ties to form an orb.

Trim the excess off the zip ties.

Place the proper batteries in the battery pack.

Secure the battery pack for the fairy lights on the top of your orb – again, using zip ties.

Thread the fairy lights throughout the orb, as desired.

Hang your pendant light.

Last year we tried something with only Emily to see how she liked it.  Once the weather broke we thought it would be fun to go camping!  Now, I’m not generally a camper whatsoever and I also know that in order to let your kiddos have fun and experience something new, you don’t always have to A) spend a lot of money, or B) leave home.  Even though we as parents might feel like we need to shower our kids with material things, all they really want is our time.

IMG_1453.JPG

I didn’t want to spend unnecessary time packing everything up needed for camping at a campground, unpacking, setting it all up in order to stay one night (because let’s be real here-I’m a one night only camper anyway!).  Last year we camped in our backyard and Emily LOVED it.  She thought it was just so fun, helped getting everything set up, and had a blast with no television!

IMG_1448.JPG

This year, of course we’ve got little brother tagging along and wanting to do everything big sister does.  It’s so so sweet and sometimes annoying to Emily, but hey, I can handle to fights between two toddlers… c’mon, who do you think I am!?

IMG_1500.JPG

So off we are this year!  Our list of our 10 “Camping With Toddlers” must-haves are:

  1. Tent
  2. Sleeping Bags + Blankets
  3. Radio
  4. Flashlights
  5. Walkie Talkies
  6. Energizer® Ultimate Lithium™ batteries
  7. Snacks
  8. Books
  9. Cooler
  10. Plates + Bowls
IMG_1456.JPG

As you might imagine, trying to set up shop with two toddlers who refuse to stay indoors while Mama does this is challenging.  Brody kept wanting to take the stakes out of the ground and was moving everything everywhere.  Emily is asking 7,000 questions and wanting to help with things she can’t really do and then getting sad about it.  BUT!… we all made it through and everything was set up just fine.  Of course once I had the tent up there was no keeping them out of there, so that’s fine!  Whatever makes you happy, kiddos.

IMG_1498.JPG
IMG_1499.JPG

I learned last year that one of the most important things to have when you’re camping, whether it be at a campground or just in your own backyard, are extra batteries!  I only brought one flashlight with me last year because I knew no one would fight over it and the stinking batteries went dead!  Like, c’mon!

This year I bought Walkie Talkies for the kiddos because I knew they’d be obsessed with them and it gets them to use their imagination instead of just being stuck staring at a tv!  You know I’m all about imaginative play!  I also have our radio with us that gives us some entertainment so they can sing and dance!

IMG_1457.JPG
IMG_1502.JPG

Well, all of those above mentioned necessities require batteries.  This is where I put my trust in Energizer® Ultimate Lithium™ batteries that I can easily pick up at Kroger.  I literally wouldn’t be able to have as much fun as we have and keep our two toddlers entertained and happy without Energizer® Ultimate Lithium™ batteries!  They’re just a lifesaver.  I love that Energizer® Ultimate Lithium™ batteries have a friggin 20 year shelf life, like, whaaaaaat!?  It totally makes sense that they’re the longest lasting AA lithium battery after knowing that!  I tend to pack everything we use for camping up and store it together so knowing I can just toss a pack of leak resistant Energizer® Ultimate Lithium™ batteries in and they’ll be perfect for the next time we camp is just so easy and convenient.  I sure hope it’s not another 20 years that I wait to take them camping again, haha, but you never know!

Friday is my favorite day of the week because it is Family Night at my house and I know we are in store for lots of laughs and good times.  Eating, playing games, crafts and even a movie our all part of our weekly family tradition.  I love turning off all the phones, social media and worries of the world  and just 100% focusing on our time with one another.  Part of my job as mom is to make sure I create an entire night all around family fun and an important part of that is activities!  Since my kids love crafting I created an Easy Peter Rabbit Bunny craft and wanted to share it with you!   What’s more fun than making cute little paper plate Peter Rabbit Bunnies while eating, snacking and watching a movie together? Nothing!

fun family night ideas toddlers

First up on our list for family night is craft time!  Our household loves crafting, especially quick and easy little projects!  Its very easy to make a paper plate Peter Rabbit Bunny and requires very little skill and supplies.  My 5 and 6-year-old love making them especially around Easter time!  Since the fun family movie  was just released at Walmart and we are proud owners of the DVD,  I wanted to make Peter Rabbit Bunnies with the kids while we watched the movie for family night!family n

I never forget the snacks during crafting and my kids love popcorn and would eat it all day if I let them so it is a must-have!  Orville Redenbacher is our go to because it is the only leading brand of microwave popcorn with no Artificial Preservatives, Flavors, or Dyes in any of its products and it tastes just like we are at the movie theater!

healthy popcorn for kids

As mom, you have got to have all your bases covered and snacking on something easy like popcorn will keep the kids satisfied and on track with their crafts until its time to eat dinner!

2.  Make the bunnies face on the small plate by gluing on the googly eyes and a pom pom for the nose.  Take the sharpie and draw a mouth with cute little whiskers as seen in picture.  Be creative!

3.  Attach the small plate (head) to the large plate (body) with the glue.   Press down until it is attached and dry.  As it is drying, glue on a cotton ball for the tail and decorate the body if you like with more pom pom’s, cotton balls or markers.

4.  Take the white paper and cut out the bunny ears.  Then using the pink streamers or paper, cut 2 smaller ears to overlay.  You can’t go wrong on ear size.  Glue the pink on top of the white ears.  Lastly glue the ears on the bunny head.  Press down firmly until mostly dry.

5.  Enjoy your easy Peter Rabbit Bunny paper plate craft.  Bonus Tip- Kids can make and give their rabbit to someone special for Mother’s Day or Easter!

Don’t Stop There!  Family night is not over!

Since my kids jump from activity to activity, even on Family Night,  crafting doesn’t last long because the kids are ready for dinner!  I like to have all my bases covered on Family Night so I had the Peter Rabbit Blu-Ray + DVD Combo ready to go and let the kids dine on their Kid Cuisine while watching the movie!

cute movies about rabbits

Only on Family Night will I let them watch something on TV (family movie) while we eat.  They think it’s so cool and it’s super easy on me to just pop in the All Star Chicken Breast Nugget Meal from Walmart and be done!  My kids love Kid Cuisine meals and even usually eat the full servings of veges they come with!

kids watching peter rabbit movie

I like knowing they will get satisfied with these little meals that even come with pudding as a dessert and not having to cook gives me more time with the family!  Now that is the topping on the cake!

Most importantly, enjoy your Family Night Fun and I hope you can make it a weekly tradition just like us!  You only get a little bit of time with your kids, make them count by creating memories with them that will last a lifetime!

Spring Staycation Essentials - Bianca Dottin

Even though I love to travel, I’ve learned to appreciate a good staycation over the years. Let’s be honest, traveling can sometimes be exhausting. Have you ever felt that you needed a vacation after a vacation? I have.

Sometimes you just need a quick getaway from home without the hassle of airport security, loud kids in the car, and a laundry list of things that could go wrong on vacation. Living in Orlando definitely has its pros because there are so many places to choose from. We’re just a short drive away from the beach and we have a handful of theme parks to choose from. Spring is one of my favorite seasons for staycations because our city is a little quieter. When I’m getting ready for our staycation there are a few Spring staycation essentials that I absolutely have to have.

1. Portable charger

How many times have you gone on vacation and needed a charger? Way too many times to count, right? I always have to travel with a portable charger so that I can capture those precious memories.

2. Beach/pool bag

No matter where I end up for my staycation, I always end up near water. Beach bags are perfect because they’re oversized and you can use them for literally anything.

3. Swimsuit

You need a swimsuit because you never know when you’ll end up at the beach, in a pool, or going down your favorite hotel’s waterslide.

4. Snacks

Snacks are an absolute must for me no matter where I’m going. I love something sweet and refreshing. My new favorites are the Cheetos® Sweetos™ and Sweetos™ Froster. The Cheetos® Sweetos™ cinnamon and sugar flavor makes the perfect snack. The icy cold Sweetos™ Froster from Circle K has a fabulous flavor that makes it perfect for any staycation. Talk about Flavored Frozen Fun! For a limited time only you can have a Sweetos combo for only $2.50 when you buy Sweetos™ Froster & Cheetos® Sweetos™. Sweetos™ Froster is an exclusive and limited time offer only found at Circle K.

5. A good book

If you’re like me and you love to have a little quiet time on your staycation then I suggest adding a good book to a part of your Spring staycation essentials checklist. There’s just something about diving into a good book that makes a staycation even more relaxing.

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and I’ve got the perfect way for you to celebrate.

This day isn’t all about romantic dinners with your significant other, or flowers or chocolate. It is also a day to shower the special people in your life (or even yourself) with love! This year, I thought I’d do something outside the traditional box, and host a Galentine’s Day brunch for some of my close gals.

This DIY brunch is so easy to do on your own, and is budget-friendly! Since D and I do not own a dining room table yet, I rented a wooden banquet table and these beautiful Parisian inspired chairs from Boston Rustic Wedding Rentals. Despite the name, you can rent any of their furniture or décor for any type of event, and it’s very affordable. They delivered it right to our house, and even set it up for us so we didn’t have to.

While I would have loved to use fresh flowers at my brunch, what I was looking to do just wasn’t in the budget at the moment, so I opted for some beautiful faux arrangements that I already own. You can also choose to put just one fresh bouquet in the center of the table if you prefer real flowers or have a smaller table.

Once I added the candles, dinnerware, and linens, the table scape came together quite nicely! I finished by adding balloons and tassels in the room, for a festive look (plus, it was a great excuse to bring some pink into the room!) which I found on Etsy for under $15.

Each of my girlfriends that attended was greeted at the table with a mimosa, their own adorable coffee mug, and a little gift bag filled with chocolates and body lotion. These cost me under $20, and were incredibly easy to throw together!

Even though I hosted for brunch, we ended up with all breakfast foods and no lunch food, so it was really just a late breakfast! It was the perfect excuse to put the New Year’s diet resolution off to the side for a day, and we indulged in a delicious spread of Belgian waffles, donuts, fresh fruit, raspberry pastries, and sausages. Top it off with a bit of fresh coffee, and it was the perfect setting to relax and catch up. I don’t get to see my girls very often since we’re all very busy, so that made Saturday extra special for all of us! It was a day full of love, appreciation, gossip, and honestly I had a great time. It’s such an easy and special event that you can throw together for your own gals or sisters, and it beats trying to make restaurant reservations last minute on a Wednesday night!

Do you have your own tips for hosting a Galentine’s brunch at home? Let me know in the comments below!

Healthy Whole Wheat Orange Muffins

Healthy whole wheat orange muffins are sweetened with honey and fresh orange juice for the perfect bright, guilt-free snack or breakfast.

I love sharing my passions with my children as they get older. I love cooking and baking, of course, and B has recently expressed an interest in helping me in the kitchen. One of the biggest perks of this, I’ve discovered, is she ends up eating foods she otherwise wouldn’t.

One of our most recent creations was these healthy whole wheat orange muffins. B and I stayed home from church because she was dealing with some asthma issues, and we had a bag of oranges that needed to be used, so we pulled a bar stool over to the kitchen island and whipped these up.

My intention was to create a healthy muffin recipe, so I left out chocolate, sugar, and butter/oil. Instead, I sweetened the muffins with honey and used applesauce for moistness. I did sprinkle the tops of the unbaked muffins with organic cane sugar for a little texture and sparkle, but that’s optional.

Healthy whole wheat orange muffins are sweetened with honey and fresh orange juice for the perfect bright, guilt-free snack or breakfast.

We love this recipe. The muffins aren’t overly sweet; they’re definitely a healthy muffin as opposed to a dessert muffin, but that’s the point. The fresh orange juice and zest give the perfect amount of brightness, while the flax meal and whole wheat flour make them hearty.

I think these healthy whole wheat orange muffins are perfect as is, but you could definitely add dark chocolate chips, cranberries, or blueberries. I’d love to make a version with maple extract, too. Of course, if you want to lose the healthy part, you can make a sweet orange glaze.

HEALTHY WHOLE WHEAT ORANGE MUFFINS

adapted heavily from Pinch My Salt

INGREDIENTS

2 eggs

1/2 cup milk (I use unsweetened almond)

1/2 cup fresh orange juice (about 4 oranges)

2 tbs orange zest

1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce

3/4 cup honey

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 cup flax meal

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp cinnamon

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

organic cane sugar, for sprinkling (optional)

INGREDIENTS

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Crack the eggs into a large bowl and lightly beat them. Add the milk, orange juice, orange zest, applesauce, honey, and vanilla extract and whisk to combine. Mix in the flax meal, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Add the flour and stir just until combined.

Scoop 1/4 to 1/3 cup of batter into greased muffin tins and sprinkle with a pinch of cane sugar, if desired. Bake muffins for 13 to 17 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Recipe makes 12 to 15 muffins.
